Andrew’s First PowWow
When we first learned we were moving to Boston instead of Vancouver I took my mom’s advice and tried to find some Native American community centers in the Boston area. She thought it would be nice to have some connections since we were moving to a city where we didn’t know many people (or so we thought!). I didn’t find anything right away, but I’m a member of quite a few Native groups on Facebook, so I posted an inquiry on the discussion boards of these groups. At the end of September, which seemed a bit out of nowhere to me by this point, I heard back from someone who told me about the North American Indian Center of Boston. On their website I noticed there was a Pow-Wow coming up (it was on Sat 17th of October) at Boston University and planned to go and check it out.
As you can tell by the title, Andrew had never been to a Pow-Wow before. I was pretty excited to bring him to his first, although it was a bit unimpressive when we arrived. It was BU’s first Pow-Wow so it was rather small, just in a room in the back of the food court. There were only about three vendors and when we first arrived there was no dancing! We came at some sort of intermission and after a little while, they got the program going again and we got to see a bit of dancing.
Although it wasn’t a large Pow-Wow like I’m used to going to,» it was still very nice because it had the closeness and personal feel of a Social. There was a lot of Inter-tribal dancing in between the formal dancing and everyone was invited to dance. I must admit that I was too shy to join in myself (it’s been so many years since I’ve danced traditional dances). Maybe next time!
…And a few pictures of Xochi because he’s cute:
